The city bills trash and sewer. The association administers the covenants, collects dues, and pays the streetlight bill.

City trash can

Charlestown picks up household trash only from a city-issued 96-gallon can. Order one through the utility billing office before you need it. There is a one-time lease fee, paid by cash, check, or money order. After the office has the payment, delivery is on Fridays.

Call 812-256-2427, extension 3, to start service. The city's billing page lists sanitation at $20.52 a month for one can, added to the utility bill. A second can is a separate lease and a smaller monthly charge. When you move, call so the city can collect the can or transfer it to your next address in town.

City Hall is at 304 Main Cross Street, Charlestown, IN 47111. The office is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Main line: 812-256-3422.

What goes to the curb

  • Weekly household trash, in the city can. Do not overfill it.
  • Yard waste: grass and leaves in paper bags, limbs cut short and stacked neatly. The city sanitation page has the current rules.
  • One bulky item a month, such as furniture or a grill. Extra items are $10 each.
  • Leave appliances, tires, electronics, paint, and batteries off the regular route. The city does not collect them with household trash.

Routes usually run one day later in a holiday week. The city sets the pickup day. Call the billing office if you do not know yours.

Recycling

Curbside recycling is handled by the Clark County Recycling District, every two weeks. Set the marked bin at the curb by 6 a.m. Email your street address to info@recycleclarkcounty.org for the schedule. The drop-off office is 112 Industrial Way, Charlestown. Phone 812-256-7942.
